CPA Julia Daniels Student Competition Award

Cary Photographic Artists (CPA) is pleased to announce a student photography competition for undergraduate college and university full time students in the Raleigh-Durham region. The top three awardees in the competition will receive a $500 honorarium each and have the entries exhibited in the 16th Annual Print Exhibition sponsored by CPA. The competition is named in honor of the late Julia Daniels, a long-time member and volunteer of Cary Photographic Artists, and is made possible through donations from her family, friends and CPA members.

The deadline for entries is September 20, 2023. No entry fee is required for up to three images in JPG format for the initial judging. The final judging will be of matted prints as provided by the entrants. The judging panel will be comprised of experienced members of CPA. See below for more details.

Timeline:

August 2023 - Formal announcement to be sent to institutions and other media outlets.
August 2023 - Select CPA jurors

September 20, 2023 - Deadline for submissions of initial JPGs

October 1, 2023 - Announcement of ten finalists and notification of students selected to submit prints.

October 1, 2023 - Notification of students not selected as ten finalists

October 23, 2023 - Prints delivered to the Cary Senior Center

October 24, 2023 - Prints juried

October 24, 2023 - Notification of awardees (three $500 awards; all three images will be hung in the exhibit); and notification of students not selected

October 25, 2023 - Prints not selected must be picked up at Cary Senior Center.

October 27, 2023 - Presentation and judges comments

October 25 – December 17, 2023 - Exhibit opens at Cary Senior Center

December 17, 2023 - Exhibition prints must be picked up at Cary Senior Center

Guidelines

  1. Competition is open to all full-time undergraduate students at Triangle area institutions of higher education regardless of major or program of study.

  2. Each student can submit up to three images in JPG format for initial judging. Images should be emailed to: hrinne2020@gmail.com. Please include the following:

    a.) Name Institution and class (fr., soph., junior, senior) (b) email © Mailing address (d) Phone number (e) Title of each work

  3. A panel of three CPA members will do the initial judging of the submitted JPG images, selecting ten images for final judging of prints.

  4. Work will be judged on artistic merit and technical proficiency.

  5. Up to ten students will be notified of selection for final adjudication and will be asked to bring a matted print that will fit in a 16” x 20” frame to the Cary Senior Center on Monday, October 23, 2023. The mat should be neutral white.

  6. Works will be juried by the CPA panel. Awardees will be notified immediately. Three $500 awards will be presented, and all three works will be hung in the 16th Annual Print Exhibition at Cary Senior Center. CPA will provide the frames for the selected works. Proof of full-time student status will be required.

  7. All matted prints not included in the show must be picked up on October 25, 2023.

  8. The three prints hung in the exhibit must be picked up on December 17, 2023 when the exhibit ends. Students may retain the frames as part of their award.
