April 10th - Diana Bloomfield - Visual Narratives: Layer by Layer

Diana's images have been included in a number of books, including Jill Enfield’s Guide to Photographic Alternative Processes; Christopher James’ The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes; and she is a featured artist in Christina Z. Anderson’s Gum Printing: A Step-by-Step Manual, Highlighting Artists & Their Creative Practice. Diana provides us with the following abstract of her talk:

I have devoted the majority of my 40 years as a photographic artist learning, practicing, and teaching alternative" 19th century photographic printing processes. This type of hand-made work often revolves around serendipity, unpredictability, imperfection, inordinate amounts of time, and always a leap of faith. And the one question that consistently arises - sometimes even in my own mind - is: Why? Given the relative ease that 21st century technology offers in photographing and in printing, why would any contemporary photographer devote so much effort to these ancient and time-consuming methods of visual story-telling?

In my presentation, I will talk about how my work has evolved, including the slow transition from 2-D to 3-D art, where I find my inspiration, and why I am continually drawn to hand-made art for interpreting these visual narratives.

Photography and Principles of
Art & Design

April 24th - Richard Bernabe - Zoom

In the late 19h Century, artists in Europe attempted to codify visual aesthetics in order to understand why certain works of art appealed to people and others didn’t. The Principles of Art and Design were our first real attempt to do so and they’re still relevant today. For a different look at composition, I will be applying these principles to photography with many photos as examples and diagrams to help see in a new way.

Richard Bernabe is a wildlife, travel, and nature  photographer and widely published author from the United States. Richard was named as one of the "Top 30 Influential Photographers on the Web" by the Huffington Post  and included  in the "20 Photographers Changing the World through Social Media" by  Influence Digest".  See richardbernabe.com
